Mmmm - Dim Sum
Day 3 started out with a little rain; well, actually quite a bit of rain. Oh well, a little rain never hurt anyone, even without the umbrella we left in the hotel room. We head to a 24 hour dim sum joint off Geylang road called Mongkok Dim Sum.
It's a wonderful little place with no frills and a handful of open air tables. It was great to sit in the open and watch the rain and we ate piping hot dim sum and had nice warm tea.
The best thing we ate there was the egg yolk custard buns. We also had the chee cheong fun (steamed rice roll) with shrimp, pork shumai, chicken feet, pan fried carrot cake, and a few other dishes. All were very good, with another favorite of both of ours being the chicken feet.
We headed to the Gardens by the Bay after breakfast to visit the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome conservatories. I highly recommend them both, and recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds. Singapore has impressed me with its beauty over and over on this trip, and we're only on day 3! These gardens were no exception. It cost SGD 28 for admission to these two conservatories, which is totally worth it in my opinion.
My First Michelin Star Restaurant
We made lunch reservations at Candlenut (one of Singapore's reasonably priced Michelin Star restaurants) about a month before our trip. We tried for dinner reservations, but it was already booked.
Lesson learned: if you want to eat at a very popular restaurant, make your reservations as far in advance as possible. The restaurant was very low key, not pretentious at all as I had expected, the food was delicious and the service wonderful. The highlight of the meal was the blue swimmer crab curry. The curry sauce was delectable, and the crab came in large chunks; the sweetness of the crab really came through the curry. If I ever have the chance again, I would love to try this place for their set dinner menu.
After the Rain
After we rested a bit back at the hotel, we set out for some chili crab, a true Singaporean dish. Long Beach Seafood in East Coast Park was our destination. The rain had cleared up by now and it was a lovely evening at the beach. We sat outside, right off the water, to enjoy our chili crab. While the crab was amazing, it was the mantou buns that made the dish. We had 3 orders to help sop up that delicious chili sauce. We took a nice long stroll along the beach after dinner and called it a night.
