This hibachi steak is made traditional "hibachi" style and served with homemade fried rice and a fresh made ginger sauce to make a full Japanese steakhouse meal that comes together in 30 minutes!
Ok, maybe traditional isn't quite the word. I used a large griddle to make this recipe, but you can make it in a large skillet as well. Either works!
This is such a fun recipe because it reminds me of being younger and getting super excited about going to dinner at Benihana to get that buttery, soy drenched hibachi steak and rice. This hibachi shrimp recipe brings up the same memories 🙂
Cooking the beef quickly over high heat let's it caramelize on the outside and still stay nice and tender (like we do with this bo luc lac, air fryer steak tips or this crispy Mongolian beef). And that ginger sauce is just so yummy to dip your buttery steak in, better the Benihana sauce in my opinion.
This is a super fun recipe to make at home (it'll save you a few bucks too) with the buttery soy fried rice and homemade Japanese ginger sauce. You can even add these air fryer potstickers to get your dinner started!

Why this hibachi recipe works
- It's ultra simple and make a whole meal! It comes together in under 30 minutes so it's perfect for quick weeknight dinner or for special occasions.
- Leftovers come out great, so it's easy to make a big batch. And it also works really well for meal prep!
- It's a perfect way to save money from going out - have your own homemade favorite Japanese steakhouse meal instead of going out to Benihana!
- The ginger sauce is absolutely to die for! It's the perfect dipping sauce for your steak, but can also be used as a salad dressing. You could also use this eel sauce as a dipping sauce.
- Hibachi rice comes out perfect being cooked on a hot surface. It's the best fried rice!

Ingredients to make hibachi steak with fried rice
Ingredients for hibachi steak:
A good quality (Choice cut or above) sirloin steak or tenderloin steak works best for this recipe. That said, any tender cut of beef like sirloin will do well (ribeye or new york strip works too), as long as it's cut in bite size pieces.
Use unsalted butter so you can control the salt content of your dish.
You can substitute any high smoke point oil for the avocado oil (canola, peanut, grapeseed, etc.).
You can use tamari as a substitute for soy sauce if you want to make gluten free steak.
Ingredients for simple egg fried rice (hibachi fried rice):
I recommended using day old or at least cold white rice to make the fried rice to keep it from getting mushy. Leftover rice works great! You may also want to try this Chinese sausage fried rice or this Kimchi fried rice for this recipe!
For the sauteed frozen vegetables, you can use any small cut frozen vegetables. They have some specifically made for stir frying, so choose whatever you like for hibachi veggies!
Sesame oil is an absolute must for this recipe. It adds that delicious nutty flavor we love in hibachi steak bites!
Ingredients for Japanese ginger sauce:
Fresh ginger is going to result in the best flavor for the ginger sauce.
The full list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Step 3: Remove and set aside to serve with fried rice and ginger sauce. I also like it served with this nuoc cham dipping sauce or this spicy Thai peanut sauce for a little something different!

Expert tips for easy hibachi steak at home
- Prep your ingredients in advance as the cooking goes very quickly once it's started. Cook rice ahead of time - the day before if possible.
- Make sure the griddle or skillet is extremely hot and the oil is hot before adding the beef to ensure it gets a nice seared crust on the outside. Otherwise, the steak and veggies will just steam and lose that great caramelized flavor. Consider cooking in 2 batches.
- Using fresh ginger will impart the best flavor in the sauce. Peel the ginger then use a grater to grate it.
- Using day old or at least cold rice is very important to make sure your fried rice doesn't end up mushy. You can use leftover rice if you have it.
- You can use white or brown rice for the fried rice.
- Any frozen small chopped vegetables will work for this recipe. Use the ones you like!
- When scrambling the eggs, don't let them sit too long or they will turn brown.
- Use a wok or a cast iron skillet if you don't have a griddle.
Frequently asked questions
Sirloin or strip steak are the typical cuts used to make hibachi steak. Other tender cuts like tenderloin or ribeye can be used as well. I don't recommend tougher cuts like chuck or brisket as it doesn't cook longer enough to get tender.
At a typical hibachi restaurant, they are using soy sauce, sesame seeds, butter, salt and pepper and garlic to season the beef and the fried rice served alongside.
The same method of cooking is used for both. Hibachi steak has a more savory flavor with the sesame and soy being used as the hibachi sauce, while teriyaki is made with a sweeter, stickier teriyaki sauce than hibachi beef.
Refrigerate leftover hibachi beef and egg fried rice in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat on the griddle on medium high heat until warmed through, or reheat in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time until warmed through.
Leftovers can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat according to the instructions above.
