Phuong Trang - Our Favorite Vietnamese Restaurant in San Diego
Vietnamese food has exploded in popularity the last few years, especially here in San Diego (honestly, I really don't know what it's been like in other cities).
I've been eating it for years thanks to a friend of mine introducing me to these oh so delicious flavors when we met many years ago.
And let me tell you, Vietnamese food is awesome. Packed with amazing flavors of fish sauce, lemongrass, fresh vegetables and delicious seared meats, I just can't get enough.
That said, the boyfriend and I have eaten at a lot of restaurants on our hunt for the best Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego. A lot.
And there are so many awesome ones.
But so far, our favorite has been Phuong Trang off Convoy in Kearny Mesa. This place has the most amazing food.
Known for their soups, egg rolls and garlic butter chicken wings, everything we've tried here has been delicious.
And the service is actually pretty decent, better than at some Asian restaurants.
What do we eat?
Good question. The menu here is huge. Pages and pages long. So we haven't tried everything. But what we have tried has been amazing.
First off, the garlic butter chicken wings are a must order. They tell you that it takes a little while to make them, but we have always gotten them in a timely manner. Just don't expect them to come out before your other food.
If you like egg rolls (who doesn't really?), they make great egg rolls here. And the Nuoc Cham (Vietnamese dipping sauce) served with them has a delightfully sweet flavor.
Soups are what's popular here. They make a mean Bun Bo Hue. The broth is deliciously beefy with the perfect amount of spice.
One of my favorites is the Vietnamese sour soup with shrimp or catfish (both are great), made with a tamarind based broth that has that perfect tang. And it has pineapple. Yes pineapple. It's delicious! You can add noodles if you'd like a heavier meal, but I like it just the way it is. It's perfect if you're trying to be healthy while eating out (I tend to fail miserably here).
The wonton noodle soup in itself is a reason to come here. The wonton filling is delicious and the noodles are cooked perfectly. We always order it with egg noodles, but they offer rice noodles as well. This is my perfect comfort food. The broth is deliciously slurp-able.
One of our all time favorite dishes to order here are the pork spareribs sauteed in fish sauce.
Talk about umami goodness - pork spareribs sauteed in a sticky sweet fish sauce served fall off the bone tender.Click To Tweet The pork is tender the sauce is lick-the-plate good. I don't know how many times I've wanted to just pick that plate up to make sure I got all the sauce off. They have a claypot catfish simmered in fish sauce as well, which I love. The boyfriend isn't as big a fan of catfish as I am, so we stick with the pork spareribs most of the time.
Like I said, the menu is huge. There are so many things to order. But these are our favorites.
They are really know for their soups, especially the pho, which is quite good as well.
