Reader Review
"I made this jasmine rice last night to go with a beef stir fry. It was the first time I made rice in the Instant Pot and now I may never go back to preparing it on the stove top! Love that it was hands off. It also turned out perfectly tender and fluffy, and the slight hint of coconut from the oil added a nice flavour. Great recipe! Definitely adding it to the dinner rotation!"

Ingredients
The full list of ingredients and amounts of rice and water for this instant pot recipe are included in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Jasmine rice is an aromatic, long-grain rice that is slightly sweet and floral. Any long grain white rice works for this recipe.
We use oil so the rice doesn't stick together. I like to use coconut oil for added flavor, but you can use another type of oil, butter or even ghee for a buttery flavor.
Optional Add-ins
For extra flavor, you can consider adding a 1-2 tablespoons of these optional ingredients:
- Chili garlic sauce or just minced garlic
- A sprig of thyme, rosemary or other fresh herbs to make an herbed butter rice
- Furikake seasoning and butter
- Cook it in chicken stock, vegetable stock, beef stock, lobster stock or any other kind of stock
- Butter/ghee and white or red miso paste (make sure to mix it in thoroughly so you don't have a big clump of miso)
- Curry powder, sumac, or any other favorite spice (try this homemade garam masala or Cajun seasoning!)
Rice to Water Ratio
It's so simple it almost seems to good to be true. The ratio of rice to water when cooking it in an electric pressure cooker is 1:1. Makes it very easy to remember.
You can also substitute broth for a more flavorful rice and the ratio stays the same.
Step by step instructions to make instant pot jasmine rice
Step 1: Rinse your rice in a fine mesh strainer until the water runs clear. Rinse rice under cold water.
Step 2: Place all the ingredients in the Instant Pot (use a non-stick insert for the best results) and mix to combine.
Step 3: Cook rice on high pressure for 4 minutes.
Step 4: Natural release for 10 minutes, then use the quick release to release the remaining pressure.
Fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
Expert tips for perfect instant pot rice
- Be sure to rinse the rice first. This removes excess starch and debris and helps prevent the rice from getting gummy.
- I recommend using the manual settings per the recipe instead of the rice setting - I find the rice setting sometimes cooks it for too long resulting in mushy rice.
- The rice to water ratio is key to perfectly light and fluffy rice. If you add too much water, the rice will turn out mushy or gummy
- To keep the rice from sticking, I recommend using a non-stick insert for the Instant Pot. This also makes for easy clean up!
- For extra flavor, you can substitute broth for the water. This crockpot chicken broth recipe is one of our go-to broth recipes.
- For even more flavor, try adding some garlic, shallots or ginger to the rice.
- Make sure to naturally release the pressure. The rice will keep cooking as the pressure naturally releases. If you quick release, the rice may not be as tender and fluffy.
- While the rice pressure cooks on high in just 4 minutes, you’ll also need to factor in time for pressure to build and release in the Instant Pot.
- To make a half batch, use 1 cup of rice instead of 2, and use 1 cup of water instead of 2. Cut the oil in half as well.
Serving options for white rice in the instant pot
- Pressure cooker rice is great served alongside stir fries like Shanghai chicken, Mongolian lamb, or twice cooked pork.
- Jasmine rice is the perfect rice to serve with curries like this red duck curry, beef massaman curry or Thai green curry.
- This easy recipe delicious with this Brazilian fish stew and Instant Pot gumbo.
- Use leftover jasmine rice (or any leftover instant pot white rice) to make breakfast fried rice or Chinese fried rice.
- Serve it just plain with butter, soy sauce, or a little bit of both (trust me!)
- You can use this rice to make dishes like this imperial rice too!
How to make brown rice in instant pot
To make brown jasmine rice (or any long grain instant pot brown rice), use the same ratio of rice to water, but cook the rice for 15 minutes instead of 4 minutes.
FAQ's
The total cooking time is about 20 minutes. This includes about 4-5 minutes for pressure to build, 4 minutes to pressure cook on high and then 11-12 minutes for the pressure release (10 minutes natural release and 1-2 minutes quick release).
If you don’t have jasmine rice, you can substitute basmati rice or any other long-grain white rice.
For long grain white rice like jasmine or basmati, use a 1:1 ratio of water to rice when cooking it in the Instant Pot.
Rice in the Instant Pot comes out sticky when it has not been rinsed thoroughly.
To rinse rice, place it in a colander or mesh sieve and run cold water over it. I usually run my fingers through it to make sure the rice is well rinsed. You may need to rinse it a few times until the water that runs through it is clear and not cloudy.
Avoid soaking the rice as this can just make it mushy.
Cooked jasmine rice should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge, where it will last for 3-4 days.
To freeze cooked jasmine rice, just let it cool completely in the fridge and then transfer it to freezer safe bags or small containers. It should last for 1-2 months in the freezer. Defrost in the fridge overnight before reheating.
To reheat, you can warm the rice in the microwave or in a skillet over medium-low heat.
