THE BEST RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH SERIES: LOS POLLOS ROTISSERIE AND CUBAN BAKERY
Welcome back to the Best Restaurant of the Month series. We ate at some pretty great spots in May, but one place in particular stood out - Los Pollos Rotisserie and Cuban Bakery. A tiny little Cuban bakery down in Chula Vista, the food was totally worth the trek down there. If you already live there, all the better...you've got an awesome restaurant right around the corner!
They have only a few tables, so I would generally plan to take it to go unless you're lucky and can snag a table. The service is great, the man helping us was very friendly...and patient...as we tried to narrow down what we "needed."

The guava and cheese pastries are to die for. They are sweet, flaky and deliciously addicting, made with a mixture of mascarpone and cream cheese (note to self...consider this for your own guava and cream cheese pastries). The cheese rolls were also wonderful, with the same cheese filling and a crunchy sugar coating. What a great way to start the morning. Don't forget the cheese muffin...oh the wonderful cheese muffin. Deliciously sweet yellow cake with a cream cheese filling; simple, but absolutely amazing. Going in, I didn't know how they would compare to my favorite Cuban Bakery, Azucar, but I have a new favorite now (sorry Azucar). As an added bonus, the prices were incredibly reasonable! I don't remember the last time I ate at a San Diego restaurant where I was able to order something for $1.
The Cuban bowl is filled with chunks of marinated and slow cooked pulled pork. Juicy and cooked to perfection, served with black beans and rice, sautéed white onions, and topped with the most amazing sweet, caramelized plantains, this dish was perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. They managed to make the most amazing flavorful rice and bean dish.
Then there were the stuffed potato balls (papas rellena)...I mean how can you argue with juicy, seasoned meat stuffed in mashed potatoes and deep fried? Right? The spicy chicken and beef were both fantastic, however, my favorite was the spicy chicken, with a good dose of spice! And those spinach empanadas. Having been trained to love the fried versions, I was slightly taken aback when I found out the empanadas were baked, but after a bite, all was forgiven. The creamy spinach filling was perfect. So perfect. I could have 20 of those things. Perhaps someday I will.
They also serve Cuban style sandwiches, an array of different empanadas, rotisserie chicken, as well as a great selection of Cuban pastries. I absolutely cannot wait to become a regular at this place. The prices are so low and food is so absolutely delicious, I would recommend it to anyone looking for an awesome meal.

So there you have it. Los Pollos Rotisserie and Cuban Bakery was the best restaurant we ate at in May 2017. And it was up against some pretty serious competitors. Some of the other contenders were:
Giorginos
If you are looking for some other great Cuban spots, the Embargo Grill and Havana Grill both have some pretty amazing food. I also hear Andres Restaurant in Linda Vista is good, but have never tried it myself. Stay tuned...I feel a post on the best Cuban food in San Diego coming on!
Follow us to find out where we ate in June!
