This spicy Cajun Remoulade Sauce recipe is made with mayonnaise, sour cream, horseradish and spicy Cajun and Creole spices - it is the most amazing dipping sauce ready in under 5 minutes!
It's great on everything from fried catfish, air fryer cheese curds and hush puppies to raw vegetables and sandwiches.
This Cajun Remoulade might just be the best sauce ever. And I'm not even kidding.
Yesterday, I was licking the sauce off the spoon while I was photographing it. It's so good. The perfect amount of heat from the horseradish, hot sauce and Cajun spices, with a bit of tang from the sour cream and sweetness from the honey.
I would not lead you wrong. You totally need this sauce in your life....it is absolutely incredible with these Maryland Crab Cakes, Cajun roasted quail and fried alligator bites, as well as these air fryer artichokes too.
What is Remoulade Sauce?
Remoulade is a Louisiana style sauce that is commonly served on po'boys, as a dip for fried green tomatoes, or a sauce for crab cakes. It has a mayonnaise base and is flavored with Cajun seasoning.
While the American version is considered a "Louisiana" version, the origins of remoulade sauce actually come from France (as is true with many Creole style dishes). The French version contains ingredients such as capers, pickles and herbs
What to Serve With Remoulade Sauce
In addition to the amazing dishes we already mentioned, this Cajun dipping sauce is amazing served with some of these dishes as well:
- Crawfish Eggrolls
- Crispy Cajun Wings
- Fried Oyster Po'Boy
- Shrimp Cocktail
Why This Recipe Works
The horseradish, Cajun spices and Louisiana hot sauce add the perfect amount of heat to the sauce, without it being overly spicy.
Using sour cream adds a nice tang to the flavor.
The honey complements the spices and tang of the sour cream.
It's SOOOOO easy to make there is no excuse not to try it!
Using homemade Cajun seasoning (if you choose to) gives this recipe the most incredible flavor!
Step By Step Instructions
This is seriously one of the easiest recipes. Just place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix....yes....it's that easy.
Once you've mixed it, I recommend covering it and storing it in the fridge for at least an hour to let the flavors come together.
However, if you're in a hurry, it can be served right away as well.
Recipe Variations
- Add an extra boost of spice by adding more hot sauce or horseradish;
- If you'd like a bit more tang, you can add some finely minced pickles or a teaspoon of vinegar to the sauce;
- Add ¼ cup pureed roasted red pepper for a wonderful added sweet and smoky flavor;
- Substitute fresh garlic for the garlic powder for a slightly chunkier sauce.

Expert Tips
- Let the sauce sit, covered, in the fridge for about an hour before serving it so the flavors have time to come together.
- If the sauce is too thick, add a couple tablespoons of water or milk to thin it out until the desired consistency is reached.
- Reduce the amount of Louisiana hot sauce and/or the horseradish for a less spicy sauce. Note, however, the flavor will not be as good.
- If you want to make this taste even more homemade, you can certainly make the mayonnaise from scratch as well (homemade mayonnaise is just in a different league than the stuff at the store).
Frequently Asked Questions
This remoulade is made with horseradish, Cajun spices, sour cream and honey. Tartar sauce is typically made with mayonnaise, pickles and dill. I personally find remoulade to be better than tartar sauce.
An aioli is an emulsion of oil and an emulsion agent (usually an egg) while remoulade sauce uses aioli mixed with spices and seasonings. So a remoulade sauce is made from an aioli.
Remoulade typically has some level of spice to it, but is not viewed as being incredibly spicy. The spice comes from a touch of hot sauce, cayenne and horseradish, but is cooled with ingredients like mayonnaise and sour cream.
You can store remoulade in the fridge for about 5-7 days.
I don't recommend freezing it as the mayonnaise will likely separate when it's thawed out.

The spicier the sauce is the better. You can then drop the heat on the main and have the sauce balance it out. Can't wait to make it (just need to buy horseradish 🙂 and I am all set).

Totally! Hope you love it April 🙂
