These Baked Sweet Potato Slices are tender and creamy, and caramelized with a harissa honey glaze. This is the perfect quick and easy side dish!
Sweet, salty and just a little spicy....that's like one of the best combos ever. And these baked sweet potato slices have it all.
Super easy to put together, this is a recipe that everyone will keep begging for. I made these randomly one night and they were such a huge hit I practically had to hide my plate from the boyfriend to keep him from stealing mine. You would have though I had Rolo Brownies or something (one of his favs).
The flavor combo of the sweet, caramelized sweet potatoes with the spicy harissa paste is just incredible guys (kinda like these honey roasted parsnips, sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts or these Korean Cauliflower Wings). Nothing like good caramelization!
Ingredients
You can use any kind of sweet potato or yam for this recipes - they all work great.
I recommend buying good quality honey for the best flavor. It really does make a difference! I'm lucky that I get fresh honey from the boyfriend's parent, but not everyone has that option. Buy honey.
Harissa paste is a spicy chili paste originating from Northern Africa. It contains several types of roasted chilies, and spices such as caraway, coriander and cumin. The flavor is incredible and is also great in this spicy chicken pasta! Buy harissa paste.
If you like the harissa, you may also want to try this Harissa Yogurt Dip - great on so many things.

Step By Step Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400F degrees.
Slice the sweet potatoes about ¼ inch thick and place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Drizzle them with the olive oil and salt and toss them to make sure they all get coated.
Roast them in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove and brush on the harissa honey (see below). I like to use a silicon basting brush.
Roast for another 5-10 minutes, until the glaze starts to caramelize and the potatoes are fork tender.
How to Make Harissa Honey
Mix the honey and harissa in a bowl until well combined. Set aside for use.
This harissa honey glaze would be just wonderful on this Roasted Acorn Squash or this Instant Pot Acorn Squash.
Variations
- You can skip the glaze and just eat the sweet potatoes plain if you prefer (I highly recommend the glaze);
- Instead of harissa, substitute chili garlic sauce, minced garlic, chili powder or a touch of cayenne pepper;
- Use the glaze on roasted butternut squash, acorn squash, or any other winter squash (try this Cranberry Roasted Butternut Squash).
Expert Tips
- Make sure the sweet potatoes are cut in ¼ slices for the best cooking.
- Always bake on a lined baking sheet as the honey will make a mess of your pan.
- Coat all the sweet potato slices with the olive oil and salt before roasting.
- Make sure the sweet potatoes are arranged in a single layer to ensure they cook evenly.
- After brushing the sweet potatoes with glaze, watch them in the oven to make sure the honey doesn't start to burn.
